Landscape and Cityscape Oil Paintings (10)
Travis’ American landscapes most frequently feature familiar subjects that we all know but have ceased to notice because we see them everyday. Often, a series of her paintings develops a community of tangential spaces with a strong sense of the history of human endeavor. She is drawn to American vernacular architecture and landscapes that have been arranged and rearranged by man’s activity. Though people are seldom included in her land and cityscapes, signs of their labors are everywhere. -
Figure (6)
Travis’s figure paintings are inspired by human activity she has observed and recorded in her extensive collection of sketch books. These works of figure and gesture are rendered in vibrant, pulsating color. The deeply textured oils are applied with palate knives; the watercolors are painted quickly, using large brushes and a minimum of drawing. The artist’s hand is evident in paint that dances across the surface to quickly create loose images in vibrating light. Flora -

Stunning in shape and color, plants scream for attention. Quick action is required so Travis most often paints them in watercolor.
