Linda Gross Brown
Copyright © Linda Gross BrownBest Of America Pastel Artists Volume IIThe shadows ebb and flow, the light shimmer as colors merge and draw you in to become part of the painting. Mysterious footprints urge you forward, a cobblestone walk twisting away from the sunlit square of a village in France . . . Linda Gross Brown’s artwork combines a mastery of craft with a striking awareness of color, light, and shadow. Pastels, as vivid as photographs, lock the eye and stir the soul.

There is a language of color in nature that can only be interpreted by being there, for me it does not express it self on film or from the corners of my mind. The little small whispers of color in the shadows and the loud voices of the light are what excite and inspire me. The colors change constantly and very quickly, so it is important to be intuitive and spontaneous. Shapes, forms, patterns and most of all, the ways colors speak to each other are what thrill me. Each painting a new voice, a new story... same language. The study of color has allowed me to see what is invisible to others and I have the joy of sharing my vision. Learning to trust the vocabulary and to listen, is the challenge. It is a solitary journey that is only completed when shared with others. -

Carol Dallas
Copyright © Carol DallasBest Of America Pastel Artists Volume III paint the invisible. Among us are the invisible-those whose beauty and longing are too intense to look at for more than a moment. So, we avert our gaze and turn, instead, toward the mundane and cosmetic, comfortably numbed by the insignificance of these. But once in awhile, we almost unwillingly catch the eyes of the invisible, who are the tender plants growing in dry ground, and our souls writhe and bend. We are exposed and we don't want to be. I paint the voiceless, as one of them. I've learned how to look pretty and be quiet. I've bought products to mask my face and skin and cover my lips, and kept my tongue still. As an artist, I celebrate the meek, and their images are my voice.

Steve Hill
Copyright © Steve Hill Best Of America Pastel Artists Volume II“The transient effects of light and colors never fail my need for making emotionally-charged paintings, done with all senses on high alert. It’s a merry chase with the light – I arrive, absorb, study, draw and search for the perfect moment in time and place to capture, grab, nail-down . . . and never lose sight of those things as I paint.”

The most exciting part of what I do is going out into the field to gather reference for my paintings. That means coming face to face with some of nature’s most prized possessions — its wild creatures. The challenging part of what I do is translating the experience onto paper. -

Becky Way
Copyright © Becky WayBest Of America Pastel Artists Volume II
An award-winning artist, Becky Way has been painting in pastel since 1978. The reflective surfaces in her still lifes are complex pieces of color that reflect a world of color and form. Way's landscapes are expressive, finding eloquent shapes and strong patterns in land and atmosphere. Colors are strong, often abstracted, and the overall effect is somewhere south of impressionistic, and north of true abstract. She is currently represented by House Gallery in Oklahoma City. -
Gary Wick
Copyright © Gary WickBest Of America Pastel Artists Volume IIGary Wick is a self taught artist working with soft pastels and is primarily a studio artist preferring to work from photographs he shoots. He says, "I paint to satisfy myself first and the rest just happens". His tall narrow Landscapes sometimes showing massive sky with tiny buildings is a representation of how small we are in totality. His long wide horizontal Sunsets are also a primary interest although he is expanding in other directions. His use of vivid contrasting colors tends to be impressionistic
at times with a realistic approach which results in documenting what he sees. -
